Following a Dream: Pedal To Produce Tours

January 14, 2019

I'm excited to announce the launch of my new business - Follow My Wheel: Pedal to Produce Cycling Tours!

NEW BEGINNINGS

Just over 12 months ago I moved down to Bright in the Victorian Alps of Australia with no job, no house, 2 bikes and big aspirations to create a new life in the country with my husband Phil.

Well, I’ve had a brilliant 12 months! We’ve found a beautiful house to live in, I’ve picked up part time work managing The Kilnhouses - a local luxury accommodation provider, and added a mountain bike to my collection of wheels.

I’ve become a keen veggie gardener, and I’m learning more about living sustainably and eating healthily. I’ve become particularly interested in the paddock to plate mentality, knowing where your food comes from and supporting local farmers.

I’ve kept up my cycling (it’s hard not to when you live in one of the best places to ride in Australia) and have thrown myself into new sports such as skiing, trail running and mountain biking.

All in all it’s been grand.

MAKING DREAMS A REALITY

However, all of this is still not quite enough to satisfy me completely.

For a long while now it has been a dream of mine to start up a cycling tour business. I spent two years as the touring secretary for Sydney Cycling Club, and over the years I have organised many cycling holidays for groups of friends. It feels natural for me to direct my passion for seeing the world on two wheels into a business.

In the last 12 months I’ve changed my mind a ridiculous number of times about the kind of tour business I want to run, to the point where I’d often simply throw my hands in the air and go outside and garden to avoid making a decision (note, my garden now looks amazing)!

All of my tour ideas had revolved around road biking - the type of riding I am most comfortable doing. I was looking at running multi day fully supported tours targeted at road cyclists who come to the area to ride the big peaks.

However one day I was out for a ride and I saw a group of people on bikes pulling in to a local chestnut farm. I too had just been at the chestnut farm getting a coffee and admiring how lovely it was to explore the local produce of the area on my bike.

I had a light-bulb moment.

Why don’t I combine my love of riding with my passion for food and local produce? The Follow My Wheel Pedal to Produce concept was born.

Bright is perfectly set up for exploring local produce providers by bike as the rail trail that runs right through the area passes wineries, berry farms, olive groves, chestnut farms, apple farms, breweries, gin distilleries and much more.

PERSONAL TOUCH

My tours will offer a bike tour of the countryside with me as a guide, visiting local producers and farm gates.

SEASON SPECIFIC

The tours will be seasonal and include tastings at each producer, plus a chance to meet the farmers, winemakers, and producers of the region and learn about living a more sustainable lifestyle.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

I can offer a local knowledge of the area, not only guiding guests through our beautiful countryside to taste fabulously fresh produce, but also offer information about the history of the region, and provide an insider's view on the local area, such as the best places to swim or have a sunset picnic.

I’m really excited about this idea, and I’ve got my first tour booked in this coming February.

So watch this space, I’ll be doing a write up of how it goes.

Below is a link to my webpage with all the information about my tours. I’ll be running tours specifically for guests who are staying at the kilnhouses, and also for the general public.

So if you know of anyone who might be interested in joining me, please share this with them!
